It's time to eat with your hands (don't forget the paper towels!) with such mouth-watering recipes as:

--Beef Ribs in the Style of Powdrell's BBQ
--And much more!
Written with the robust DR. BBQ flare, "Dr. BBQ's Big-Time Barbecue Road Trip!" is part cookbook, part witty travelogue, and part guidebook adventure—but all barbecue, all the time!

Customer Review

I was expecting a book mainly about a trip around to restuarants but it turned out to be much more.

Somehow Dr. BBQ managed to put out a book with four topics running together and at the same time! There is the cookbook portion, stories about regional bbq cuisine all intertwined with explainations of the barbecue competition circuits.

The recipies are for everything in the BBQ world, rubs, sauces, meats, beverages, side dishes, and desserts.

This is not a tour of every restaurant in each area but a
he hits the major ones and then hits a couple no one has heard of.

The book starts out with his tour of Kansas City. There is 16 topics in the Kansas City section, including the American Royal and KCBS itself. The restaurants each get a little write up.

Then he was off to North Carolina (because Kansas City and North Carolina are right next to each other, right?) He heads off with a friend to score each location. Oddly he does not score the KC locations.

Tennessee was next. Memphis in May is discussed as well as 'The Jack.'
Something else about the book sticks out in this section. He discusses the sterotypes of each style and tears it down if it isn't true. For example Putting slaw on a pork sandwich is considered a Carolina thing, however in Memphis you get slaw served on pork sandwiches. Locations are not scored again just discussed.

Now he heads off to Teaxas where he scores the locations again. It is done on a different scale as Carolina but scored none the less.

he then is off to the North Midwest, Illinois, Ohio, etc. and then to the South, the east, and even the west. No locations are rated but there is more the same - locations you may have heard from with some good recipes mixed in.

This would be a good book for any level of BBQer to pick up. A beginner could even start with it. Because of the diversity of the book it could become one of the handbooks of the BBQ world.

This book provides everything you need to cook for all your guest. I love the recipes from all over the Bar-B-Que loving country and perfect for my Green Egg.

Dr. BBQ is the Real Deal - Pharmeggist - Prattville, AL USA
First of all I have to say that I own all four of Dr. BBQ's Cookbooks. The recipes are fantastic and the directions are easy to follow. Dr. BBQ doesn't care what you cook on his recipes work for just about any cooker you might own. The Stories in Road Trip are a great read by themselves. The wealth of recipes in the book is a true treasure, too.

My daughter, who is now four, has had egg, nut and dairy allergies since birth. Like the authors son, she was also allergic to my breast milk. I thought I knew it all when it came to providing meals/baking for her, but when I saw this book for sale I thought I'd buy it for interest and in a strange way to support the author who's been through what we have been (are are going) through. Well, I am really impressed and am very grateful to the author for writing it. I have tried 2 recipes which came out fabulously (blueberry muffins and banana muffins) and have the carrot cake baking in the oven while I type!! It look and smells like a success already! Other recipes I've tried for banana muffins have turned out a stodgy gooey lump, but the authors recipe for these were really lovely. Light, distinct pieces of banana and with a really pleasing golden crust which can be quite hard to achieve without eggs or dairy! I'm very happy and would easily serve these up to non-allergic visitors without needing to explain why they aren't quite up to scratch compared to a 'normal' muffin! The recipes use simple, storecupboard ingredients, and apart from a few recipes which use products not available in New Zealand (for eg milk-free whipped topping) I shall be working my way thru this book! A big thank to the author for this one!!

A good first book - foodie - singapore
I have children who have egg, nut and dairy alllergies so I was really excited to find this book. I have been cooking special meals for them since they were little so the recipes here are not too exciting to me. However, for parents who are just starting to cook special meals for their children, this would be a very good first book. What I like about it is that the author does not use artificial egg replacers in her desserts and she does have a large number of desserts/cookies/candy recipes. There is an interesting recipe that uses 7-UP! It is called "Milk Free Biscuits". Now that I would like to try.

A must-have if you've got more than 1 kid and not all have allergies! - Tanya Dennis -
Is there anything worse than having your daughter who LOVES French toast sit next to your son who is allergic to milk and eggs? Enter this book to the rescue.

With a big, clean format, this book is heavy on the areas where these allergies cause problems. She's got a ton of great-tasting cookie, cake, and bread recipes. And, yes, several wonderful look-alike, taste-almost-alike recipes like egg, nut and dairy-free French toast! (My husband actually likes her version of French toast better than the original.) Her cake and frosting recipes have saved my son's birthday parties. Even school moms whose kids have no allergies have asked me for some of these great recipes. I have thoroughly enjoyed EVERYTHING we've tried from this book.

I am giving it 4 stars instead of 5, however, because of the high price and lack of photographs. For (and after seeing the cover) I expected pictures. If you're not going to give me pictures, I would like more recipes for the money.

That said, even at this price, I GLADLY RECOMMEND this book.

Features 353 recipes including how-to information on grilling-and 16 color photos!

Innovative and modern dishes with easy-to-find ingredients and easy-to-follow instructions.

Known as "King of Q" in Canada, Chef Ted Reader is widely acclaimed for his cooking's cheeky inventiveness and fabulous flavors.

Customer Review

I have become addicted to Ted Reader's cookbooks. His latest, On Fire in the Kitchen is as adventurous and enjoyable as his others.

He makes the amateur chef want to get back into the kitchen. One word of warning however: you won't want to go out to dinner again....between having fun cooking his recipes, and eating the results, dining out will become boring.

Put your favorite music on, put something special in your best crystal goblet, get out that funky apron....

And start cooking.

A devoted follower of the 'King of Q'.

Fabulous! - K. Ono - Waterloo, ON Canada
I won't live without this cookbook! I bought this (my second copy) for the cottage. I must have one at home and one at the cottage. I have yet to make a recipe that people don't rave about.

With more than 740,000 visitors a month, Chowhound.com has become a favorite source of information for those who want to take their dining experiences off the beaten path. So why should San Francisco eaters limit their choices to the same old locales found in most restaurant guides? As fun to read as it is comprehensive, The Chowhound's Guide to the San Francisco Bay Area is all about finding the perfect bite for every occasion, focusing on the undiscovered gems that will generate tomorrow's buzz. From the best Chinatown noodle shops and secret tamale ladies to sumptuous sushi meccas and sensational stock-up stops for a romantic Sonoma picnic, this is the richest treasure trove of San Francisco restaurants, cafes, take-out counters, delis, farmer's markets, and food carts ever compiled.

Want to out-Zagat Zagat? Start a website for chowhounds and get them to eat at various places and send in a report to your website. When your website registers 500,000 hits go to a publisher and talk them into publishing your aggregation of reviews in one compact volume. Come up with variations on the theme, like farmers markets and lunch trucks, so you're not just stuck in the restaurant world. Of course it helps if you have a name and a column somewhere.
Create a "by-cuisine" index (besides the main alphabetical one) that sub-divides cuisine into Chinese (Beijing) Chinese (Dim Sum) Chinese (Cantonese) and see if anyone can top that!
The format and organization of this guide is as individual and eclectic as the editor and chief chowhound, Jim Leff. Although the book is laid out alphabetically the alphabet can refer to anything here-a town, a food, a lunch truck. Santa Rosa, Sausage, Sausalito, and Scones all follow each other alphabetically. Luckily there are several indexes to help the reader sort things out.
Be forewarned. Chez Panisse isn't in here and neither are some of the other well-known restaurants in S.F., Berkeley, and Napa where I ate during my last visit five years ago. But the next time I see my cousin in Berkeley, I'll remember that the best rugelach in the world (or at least in the bay area) can be found in a bakery there. I've got to bring him something, right?

I love this book - Bunny Howard - Boston
This is the best San Francisco food guide.

This book was very helpful on my recent visit to San Francisco. I have visited San Francisco a dozen times, but have never had such delicous food.

I saved so much money too.

If visiting SF, this is the book to get. I've used them all and know what I'm talking about.
